My husband, Carl, and I moved from Peoria IL, to SD last August.

I start in a paramedic program next August, as well as continuing the wildland fire courses I'm taking, so I may not be going anywhere for the the next year.

As for running, I do trail run some, but mostly go for mud obstacle course races. Right now they have to be late May through early August until I'm finished with school, but again, we'll see what happens.

Oh, and for your notes: I have three sons with wonderful wives, and a total of seven grandchildren. I married, oh so many years ago, an Air Force man, but traveled overseas to Indonesia when my husband was out of the Air Force and working for Caterpillar Inc. I've been a middle school teacher, a fund raiser for a private university, a university-level teacher (doctorate in Teacher Ed), owned a llama and alpaca business, and currently am a certified interior attack fire fighter and EMT-Basic going for wildland fire medic. More than some and less than others.

I tell people I get bored easily.

My brother, Chuck Schweizer, '63, has been a financial manager and currently is working on retiring and enjoying life to the fullest.

11 November 2013 UPDATE ON CHARLIE WIGGINS ('65) extracted from the Washington Courts website:

Justice Charles K. Wiggins

Charlie Wiggins was elected to the Supreme Court in 2010. He was admitted to the Bar in 1976 and focused primarily on representing hundreds of clients in appeals, both civil and criminal, in the State Supreme Court, the State Court of Appeals, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and once as co-counsel in the United States Supreme Court, in addition to trying cases in several different counties throughout Washington. He practiced with a small Seattle law firm at the time known as Edwards, Sieh, Wiggins & Hathaway. He served as a judge on Division Two of the Washington Court of Appeals, following which he established a small firm on Bainbridge Island handling exclusively appellate cases. He has also served as a pro tem superior court judge in a number of cases in King and Jefferson Counties and as a pro tem district court judge in Kitsap County.

The son of a career warrant officer, Justice Wiggins grew up in the Army and earned the Boy Scout Eagle Scout award. With the help of an ROTC scholarship, he attended Princeton University, where he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He spent the next four years in the Army Military Intelligence Corps, leaving as a Captain. While in the Army, Justice Wiggins was able to attend night school, earning a Masters Degree in Business Administration. The G.I. Bill helped him to attend Duke Law School, where he graduated in 1976.

Justice Wiggins is a member of the Supreme Court Rules Committee, the Administrative Committee, the Personnel Committee, the Temple of Justice Centennial Committee, the Appellate Education Committee, the Disciplinary Advisory Round Table, the Capitol Furnishings Preservation Committee and the Board for Court Education. While in private practice, Justice Wiggins was active on the Washington State Bar Rules Committee, the Disciplinary Board, and other committees and task forces. He served as president-elect, president, and past president of the Washington Chapter of the American Judicature Society. He worked with a coalition of lawyers, bar associations and government groups to establish the nonpartisan award-winning website votingforjudges.org. The Young Lawyers Section of the Washington State Bar Association gave Justice Wiggins their Professionalism Award in 2008. In 2012, he was awarded the Herbert Harley Award by the American Judicature Society for promoting the effective administration of justice.

Justice Wiggins has served as an elder of Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church on Bainbridge Island, on the Civil Service Commission of Bainbridge Island, on the Editorial Board of the Kitsap Sun, and on the Board of the Central Puget Sound Campfire Boys and Girls. He has traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, with his church's high school youth group five times to build houses for families and twice to post-Katrina New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity. In 2001, he partnered with Habitat for Humanity to organize and lead the lawyers of Kitsap County in building a home for a single mother and her children, and again in 2009 to build a home for a second single mother and her children, earning him the 2010 Humanitarian Award from the Kitsap Bar Association. In the early nineties Justice Wiggins traveled to Albania three times to participate in judicial conferences, assisting with that country's transition from communism to democracy. In 2004 he was named Volunteer of the Year by the legal clinic of the Union Gospel Mission in Seattle, where he counseled and represented many residents.

Justice Wiggins and his wife, Nancy, live on Bainbridge Island; their daughter Amy and son Sam are both now in their twenties. In their spare time, they enjoy boating in the San Juans, hiking in the Olympics, and in 2008 rode in the Seattle to Portland classic bike ride on their tandem bike. Justice Wiggins also enjoys snowboarding and scuba diving.

30 September 2013 MOVED: BABETTE STAFFORD Smith ('67) from El Paso, Texas to Argyle, Texas.  New email: ESMITH9544@GMAIL.COM

We moved here in North Texas  as we are both retired now and decided to share a property with my daughter and her family who moved up from San Antonio.   We chose North Texas as she and her husband adopted two little girls from S.A. and felt it would be safer to move some distance from San Antonio as the biological family are heavily into drug dealing.  We now live on a 1.7 acre property with two homes on it.  Ours is rather small (900 + square feet) and we share the large home's gourmet kitchen, laundry room, etc   It is communal living at its best as we still have our own "space" to retreat to!       We absolutely love being grandparents actively involved in our grandchildren's lives!   I'm also a volunteer at my granddaughters' school.

22 August 2013 UPDATE FROM MELISSA STREETER ('63):

Last year, having sold my home and divesting myself of most of my things, I decided to honor my life-long dream of living in France. I had freelanced in Paris twenty years prior, and when I dialed a friend from that time, she was still at that number! She introduced me by e-mail to a friend in her building whose apartment was up for rent, and I took it: 8th floor overlooking the whole of Paris, my view of the Eiffel Tower a parenthesis around the beginning and end of each day.

I became a card-carrying member of La biblioteque Andre Malraux, which gave me access to every library in Paris, and I routinely checked out books (English, French), film noir DVDs (organized by director!), used their free WiFi, and browsed and decompressed, as the French are the most studious and quietly considerate people on earth. I became familiar with and developed an addiction to special radio and tv shows (continual language download), made friends, got invited to museums, en plein aire markets, outdoor cafes, and dabbled in long conversations about art, music, literature and other deep subjects to which I mostly responded, "Mais, ce n'est pas vrai!" I randomly took busses to whatever neighborhoods they took me to. I criss-crossed Paris on foot numerous times weekly to gobble up everything in my path--architecture, conversation, store fronts, deals, markets, attire, styles, signage. Through it all, I stumbled into conversations about cultural and language differences with people I met by chance while in pursuit of an accordion which I'd never played, pianos for when I am rich, asparagus for that night's dinner. I took the bullet train to Brussels to visit a friend I hadn't seen since working in Barcelona with him twenty years earlier. I went alone and with friends to movies, art gallery openings, lectures, concerts, church, plays, organ concerts in famous cathedrales, on the way strolling through parks and gardens and stopping at brasseries for lunch, un cafe, une religieuse. I bought avant-garde eye glasses from my neighborhood optometrist who taught me cool slang. I patronized the local shoe store, buying four pairs of gorgeous Italian high heels I have yet to find occasion to wear in Los Angeles where we spend our lives in our cars. I shopped for groceries each day that started with a miniscule cup of pitch-black coffee, browsed and bought at department and used-book stores, sketched, tried out expensive pens on smooth drawing paper, mingled with other book lovers at the stalls lining the Seine, and made a pilgrimmage to our beloved Orleans.

UPDATE FROM TISH BRITT Douglas ('57) on LEE BRUBAKER ('57) and GAYLE DOVER ('57):

Today (11 May 2013) I had the privilege of attending the wedding of Dr. and Mrs. Lee Brubaker.  Both are OHS class of '57.  The bride is Gayle Dover, and the groom, of course, is Lee Brubaker.  Gayle and Lee were sweethearts in our junior year, then Gayle's dad was rotated back to the States for our senior year and their lives went in different directions.  They met again at the St Pete OHS reunion last autumn.  They will reside mostly in Casper, WY, where Lee continues in his work as a family practice MD.  Their second residence will be Gayle's home on a lake north of Little Rock, AR.  I know that all the OHS family joins me in wishing them great happiness in the years ahead.

Abel is still working as a field engineer testing software delivered for use as an army system to facilitate specific functions: field artillery, infantry, Aviation, etc....  Love working and enjoy working with all of the young people of this generation and get to interface with active duty military.  Chris and I are still riding horses but have gone from 20 to 6 on the Whiteoak Ranch.  My twin Aubrey is all but retired and doing great.  We are truly blessed, especially me with all the surgeries and accidents.  I am attaching a newer picture of me from this year.  Well its actually Aubrey in the center (retired Colonel) me to his left and my older brother, Joseph to his right.  This was recently taken at my Dads burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

30 Jan 2013 UPDATE FROM BOB SHANER ('67):

After a considerable amount of planning and preparation, I am pleased to announce my retirement on 1 March 2013, after 39 years of dedicated service to McDonnell Douglas and the Boeing Company.  I consider myself very blessed and fortunate to have worked there.  I will be leaving with fond memories of the many fascinating jobs that I’ve had and the great friendships that were formed along the way.

I will truly miss the people whom I’ve had the pleasure of knowing at Boeing but look forward to spending more time with my family since this has always been, and will always remain, my top priority in life.  My granddaughters – Abby (9), Lindsey (7), Megan(5) – and my grandsons – Gabe (3),  Ben (10 months) and Giacomo (1 month)  – are at very interesting ages and provide a constant source of amazement, enjoyment and pride.

About a year ago, my Dad, Lt Col Elmer E Shaner, passed away at age 90 and Mom, at age 92, keeps asking “are you retiring soon?”.  Yes, I am a sterling example of the “sandwich generation” and feel that the timing is right for my next “move”.

6 Dec 2012 UPDATE FROM JEANNIE ASTRELLA ('62):

Hi Dave!

Met Lance in Monterey last week for the the Big Sur Half Marathon.  We didn’t run but his inamorata, Kimberlee, enters every year; she had a decent finish.  Lance and I wandered the Presidio of Monterey – our home after Orleans - and waxed nostalgic about our time there.  Am attaching a photo of us outside one of the Defense Language Institute buildings and one of Lance and Kimberlee in front of our old quarters.  The weather was perfect all 4 days and it great to see my brother again after 5 years.

PS:  Can’t resist also attaching a photo of the great view of Monterey Bay from my BOQ room

6 Dec 2012 OHS MINI REUNION:  An impromptu gathering of eight OHSers and Milt Creighton's wife, Faye, met at Cathy Rodger's in Alexandria, Virginia for an afternoon of catching up, and dinner at Le Refuge French restaurant.  What a nice time.  We need to do this more often.

13 Oct 2012 A MESSAGE FROM JUMI BUTLER ('67):

Many thanks to all who’ve sent me messages of encouragement upon learning that my cancer, for which I’d been treated in 2010 and 2011, had returned.  Some of you may know that I returned to work on Dec 1, 2011. But it seemed I never got my previous energy back. Since early this year, I’ve been complete taken over by it. Since you are my friends, I’ll spare you the long and tortuous details.

You all know that when I do something, I go whole hog, dive in head first, do it up good! On that note, most people who’ve been diagnosed with cancer deal with just that diagnosis and treatment and proceed on with their lives.

That wasn’t dramatic enough for me. On a subsequent visit to my Stanford surgeon, it was determined that my potassium level was dangerously high, my ureters had collapsed (endangering my kidneys) and I had another tumor. Drains were inserted into my kidneys and we proceeded to restart chemo.

The first chemo hit hard and I was down almost for the whole two weeks til the next one, which was scheduled for 10-3. We thought the chemo was the problem. When we got to the office on the 3rd, the PA only took about five minutes and then said "I think we need to hospitalize you, you're totally dehydrated and your pressure looks way down."

In French Hospital (in San Luis Obispo) an angel of a nurse, Erica, just took charge. She, under supervision of Dr. Vatsa (the admitting physician), started pumping fluids, antibiotics, heart meds to bring up blood pressure, and to slow down my heart which was in afib due to the extremely low blood pressure.

They admitted me into the hospital, “for a few days” - I figured a week and I was right because I came home yesterday, the 10th.

I’m really glad to be home and am recouping, still taking some meds. The plan is to restart cancer treatment in a week or so.

Again, thanks for your wishes and prayers. They are appreciated.

Jumi

17 July 2012 UPDATE ON MIKE GIESE ('70) (email received 17 July 2012)

Hello you guys…….
I'm in France now….  at the house in Aix,

I picked up my Citroen Traction Avant last week in Paris and then got a fellow K Town Raider at the airport (CDG)  and we drove to K Town,   we managed to get on base,  (and Ramstein too)  and did a good visit…..    there have definitely been some changes since 1970…………  serious money has been spent,  and it looks like we are going to be there for awhile….

after K Town we drove down to Colmar in Alsace,  where I have a good buddy and I bought a  Mobylette,   always wanted one,  this one runs great,  got it for 200 E,  I will keep it in Aix,   sure it will be handy to pick up the bread and croissants  Sunday morning..

From Alsace,  we drove down to Gap where my sisters in law,  have an Auberge,  then from there to Aix,  where I have started some landscaping projects, have a backhoe working now….

I'm here until the first week in Aug.  will drive the Traction back to Paris,  and will for sure stop in Orleans, and see whats going on there...  then back to the Island for Hurricane season…    I hope the Tropics look good for the reunion in Tampa,  so I can see you all then.

Take care

Mike

1 July 2012 UPDATE ON ROB STOHLMAN ('65):

I retired from the Department of Commerce on June 29, 2012, after 27 1/2 years of federal civilian service.  During my federal civilian career I also worked for the US Army Reserve, Department of the Army and FEMA.  With the latter I was deployed to Baton Rouge after hurricane Katrina for 30 days.  In 1998 I retired from the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel with almost 28 years of combined active and reserve service.  I now will have much more time to pursue genealogy while waiting for my wife of two years, Vanda, to retire.

For over 20 years I was a Scout leader, four with the Cub Scouts and the rest with the Boy Scouts, including five as the Scoutmaster..  My son, Robby, made Eagle Scout, thus joining his uncle Bruce (OAHS 67), his grandfather and me.  My wife's son, Grady, is also an Eagle Scout.  My wife and I have a cabin in West Virginia where we go one or two weekends a month to restore our souls.  It is quiet and a great getaway and I plan on spending time there.

I won't be able to make the reunion in Florida, but wish all a great time and maybe I can make the next one.

25 June 2012 OHS GEAR STORE items:  There are currently some St Pete Reunion items in the OHS Gear Store, and between now and the big event, you can expect to see more.  Items include a button, mug, tote, messenger bag, plate and candy jar.  Coming soon are several shirts and other items you may like, including Class of 1962, 1965 and 1967 reunion shirts in recognition of their great sign up rates for the reunion.  If you want a reunion shirt for your Class, just ask.

25 June 2012 UPDATE ON JIM POKORSKI ('62)

My schooling was in Verdun, one year and Orleans, almost three years. Several of the guys I hung around with in Orleans, Hurley Wilvert, and another whose name I no longer remember went there by train a few times and partied our little hearts out.  We did visit cultural icons like the Ifell tower and Notre Dame Cathedral.  I also visited the Left Bank, Crazy Horse Bar and underground Paris. The "working girls" were not expensive and also not much older than we were.

I completed my college studies at Kent State (several years after the shootings, although I had several Profs. who were there at that time) and managed to spend 40 plus years in the telecommunications business starting with Bell Tel in Virginia in '63, Mid-Continent in PA, Farmers & Merchants in VA, United Tel Com in Ohio which Started a long distance company called Sprint Telecommunications Corp, Then as a VP's gofer in North Carolina for about a year, then a staff weenie for another Executive VP in Florida for several years before returning to Sprint Local Telcom in Ohio to close out my career as a Division Engineering Manager for Ohio, Indiana and Chicago.  Had a hell of a grand time in the ensuing 40 some odd years.  Met a lot of fine folks worked for some really super people and my kids have friends they stay in touch with in five states.  So they had as many moves as I did growing up but didn't have to have all those damn shots every time I got transferred overseas like we did. Made a lot of friends and my wife, kids and I had a heck of a good life.  Always some excitement, never boring with  good  'ol Dad.

20 Jun 2012  MESSAGE FROM JACQUELINE LAPLACE (Faculty):

TO ALL MY FORMER STUDENTS WHO ARE GOING TO ATTEND THE REUNION  (In St Pete)

In the first place,, I would like to thank warmly all those students who have insisted to have our participation in the Orleans High School reunion.
Unfortunately, we are both very sorry and disapointed for we will not be able to be with you in St Petersburgh.  Jean-Marie had a very important surgery in July 2008 in Paris (he stayed 5 days between life and death) and since then, he goes every year in June, after different medical tests, for a follow up visit. This visit was yesterday and the surgeon strongly disaproved this journey to the States, arguing that the long plane trip  would be much too tiring for him. Of course, I cannot think of going without him and I am very disappointed not to be able to meet again some of my former students and teachers who will attend this reunion.
We have a wonderful memory of the 1987 reunion  in Las Vegas and regret very much not to be able to attend this one
Incidently,  for those who still have the 1967 OHS Annual (Le Troyen 1967), I indicate that on the second picture page which has 3 pictures, in the picture on the left, the man standing under the statue of Joan of Arc , representing the Mayor of Orleans is my father (who died several years ago).
This is a strange coincidence, for I remember 1967 as a very sad year when all my students and all our American friends (Jean-Marie had also been working for the Army for 14 years) were leaving France

We wish you a huge success and are sure you will have a great time together ! All our thoughts
will be with you.

Love

Jackie Laplace

P.S. Please, excuse me if my english is not perfect (I have not spoken english since 2007,

5 Jun 2012 UPDATE ON PAM BROWNING ('71):  When asked about her new job, she replied:

I always feel like this answer needs a disclaimer…I spent almost 20 years as a middle manager in a corporate environment and after being downsized from my cushy corporate job decided to move in a completely different direction.  So…I’m in school to become certified to teach English as a second language to adults (getting my teaching certificate and getting certified in ESL).  I teach an ESL once a week.  I also trained and became a dog groomer because I thought it’d be fun…turns out it’s not as fun as I thought it’d be but for now it’s my primary job….and I just stated at a new place this past Saturday.

I was also a Paralegal (a long time ago) and of course had all of the requisite “you’re kidding me, you did that?” jobs in college.  Those included my all-time favorite which was driving a mid-size Mercedes bus from San Diego to Tecate, Mexico twice a day for a company called Mexicoach.  I was also a Taco-Bellette and worked at the San Diego State University library in the University Archives.

1 Jun 2012 UPDATE ON JEFF LAACK ('67):  Retired from the Army in 1992 as LTC, worked for Maritz Marketing Research until 2008, and now teaches part time at the College of Lake County, his local community college.  He and wife, Eileen, enjoy traveling, and Jeff especially enjoys fishing as the attached photo attests to.  New email: LAACKWJ@SBCGLOBAL.NET

1 Jun 2012 MOVED: BOBBY COLLINS ('64) from Lagrange, Georgia to Pflugerville, Texas.  New email: BRAVOCHARLIE@ALUMNI.UTEXAS.NET

When questioned about the move, how he manages to take his job with him, and whether we might see him at the reunion, he sent the following reply:

To be honest, I haven’t been to the Broken Spoke since 1968.  I will have to check it out.  Pflugerville is at the other end of Austin.  Growing up here (every Christmas and vacation and unaccompanied period during my father’s career) and then finishing high school and college, there used to be an unwritten rule that North Austin was more respectable.  Things have changed a lot but my family still lives north and my daughter is in Dallas, less than three hours from here.

The trick to taking your job with you is changing careers frequently.  After nine years in the Marines, I joined corporate America so I wouldn’t have to move so much.  I moved 8 more times until three years ago when I retired and started teaching high school math.  I was certified in Georgia and now have a 1 year certificate for Texas.  I will be starting a new school year at one of the high schools in North Austin when the reunion takes place.  With all the other aspects of moving, starting a new year at a new school will be just too much excitement to be able to take off for a long weekend.

My lament is that I have always been in some transition phase for each of the previous OHS reunions.  I am a big fan of gatherings like these and one of my personal goals is to muster up a contingent of folks like me who didn’t finish high school at OHS and get them to a reunion.  I see only one or two names that I recognize on the attendee list but there are lots on your class roster.  For example, Judy Nadeau Cuoco has a younger brother who was in my class.  Bitsy Caballero and Gaby Miner are active and I will make a major push to get all of us to the next reunion.  See you there.

24 May 2012 UPDATE ON AUBREY ('60) and ABEL ('61) WHITE:

Dave,

I am attaching a couple pictures of Abel and me. We were part of a group invited to Ft Hood, Texas for a welcome home ceremony for Viet Nam Veterans. 5 21 2012.

The picture is taken with a replica of a Viet Nam memorial to be built on the grounds of the State Capital in Austin.

The second is of us with Lieutenant General Campbell, Commander III Corps and Ft Hood, a friend of Abel's. Abel is on the right and I am on the left side.

This Thursday we have been invited back to participate in a "pass in review" with Soldiers on the parade field. I have not paraded since my change of command, August 1992. This should be fun!!

We were both interviewed by the local NBC affiliate. The big question to me was what is the difference between this welcome home ceremony and when I returned from Viet Nam. My answer was "that today we were welcomed back and thanked by so many for doing our duty. It is a great feeling. In 1968, the good news was I did not get spit on or objects thrown at me as I arrived back in the States, but the bad news was being heckled by folks with bull horns.  There were no handshakes. But I also knew that the voices of hecklers were not a reflection of the majority of the folks in this great nation; more importantly I am so glad to see that today soldiers are welcomed back and recognized for their service to our nation."

22 Mar 2012 UPDATE ON ABEL WHITE ('61):

I am doing great and took a new position as an Army Aviation test officer with Computer Science Corporation.  I basically test software, hardware, network data on the AH 64 Apache, the KIOWA OH58 and the CH 47 along with the UH 60.  I moved from Killeen to Buckholts, Texas and have a20 acre horse /farm ranch which is doing good.  My twin Aubrey (62) retired from the University of Texas at Austin and enjoys his activities.  I did have complete knee replacement recently, but do not use a cane anymore.  LeoLena is the horse and great barrel racing horse. I enjoy working and being around people and then getting home to our 14 horses and working with them. My wife Chris is a great trainer and horse rider.  Chris is, a nurse and that has been a blessing.   I plan to attend the reunion and get my application in.  I did retire from the Army in 1991 after twenty three years of service and attained the rank of 05,LTC. I served in Viet nam and received several valor awards as a forward observer and commander in the 1st Cavalry Airmobile Division (now mech).  My twin brother Aubrey recently posted information on VN Vets being exposed to agent orange and herbicides.  I looked into it as  i had quadruple bi pass, then pace maker inserted, then stints.  The VA rated me as 80% disabled and the benefits from that have been rewarding, especially in Texas.  If you served in VN may want to read Aubrey's information from last year posted in OHS class news.   My three children all grown up and have their CAREERS.  I have two grand daughters and one great grandson, so am blessed with family.  Some of my best memories are from Orleans American high school and my experiences there.  I personally thank Dave for all he does for us.  We are blessed.

2 Feb 2012 UPDATE ON RUSTY RALSTON ('65):

Rusty Ralston retired from Blue Ridge Community College on 1 February 2012.  In his honor, the college established a scholarship for veterans to assist them in their education.  Veterans benefits don't always cover everything the students need.  This scholarship fund will help close that gap.  The  scholarship currently sits at nearly $7500.

To date, six OHS'ers have made a donation as has the OHS Fund.  If you would like to make a donation, you may contact Amy Kiger at Blue Ridge Community College.  Her contact information is kigera@brcc.edu and her telephone number is (540)453-2211.  Any size donation will be appreciated.

Rusty has informed me that he will be returning to BRCC in March as an adjunct instructor of First Aid & CPR.  Part-time job with no benefits, but his wife will not allow him to become a couch-potato.  In fact, he has joined Gold's Gym and is having a great time there.  After sitting behind a desk for the past 12 years, he needs to work out.

1 Feb 2012 UPDATE ON AUBREY WHITE ('60): Aubrey will retire from The University of Texas at Austin at the end of February, 2012.  His new email is AUBREY.WHITE@MAIL.UTEXAS.EDU.

My wife and I both retired May of 2009 from teaching careers.  We then bought a houseboat in France that we named Le Canard Qui Rit.  Now, we travel the canals and rivers of France each year from April until October then return to Arizona for the other six months of the year so we can avoid France's winter weather.  Our home port is Briare which is not too far from Orleans so we have been back there several times.  In fact I was there this year for the Fete de Jeanne d'Arc.

21 Dec 2011 UPDATE ON JERRY ANNE HARROLD (History teacher):  She called me tonight to let me know she recently left her home in Boulder, Colorado, and has taken up residence at the Balfour Retirement Community in Louisville, Colorado.  Her address is 1331 Hecla Dr; Louisville, Co 80027.  Her phone is 303-443-5271.  She does not have a computer.  She expressed regrets at not being able to come to the reunion next year.  She also said that she'd love to receive photos of her former charges.  We'll send her a nice set from the reunion, but in the meantime, feel free to send her one of yourself.  One of the reasons she moved is due to the onset of dementia.  She was having trouble remembering names, and she didn't have her yearbooks with her to jog her memory, but Chuck Ralston, she remembered you and your Dad and his band.

30 Nov 2011 NEWS FROM MELISSA STREETER ('63)

While in Paris over Thanksgiving, I had dejeuner avec Jean-Claude a l'Hotel Marriott who looks wonderful, en pleine forme et de bonne sante.

He wanted to know about everyone's interest in another reunion in Orleans, and when I said it looked as though the idea was dying aborning, he threw out a terrific idea that may get us back on track.

He said he would be willing to act as liaison between us and le maire d'Orleans to see if he, the mayor, would be agreeable to erecting a commemorative plaque with a bit of history explaining the role of the US militaire and its contribution to Orleans during, quoi, 1954-1967. Jean-Claude also had the creative idea for us to hold our reunion in May so we could, with the support and agreement of Monsieur le maire, participate in the Jeanne d'Arc parade.

Jean-Claude made the interesting observation that many people in our old hometown are of such recent generations they have no idea we were even there.

Jean-Claude "arranges things between governments," as my brother Jon once put it, and as un avocat, Jean-Claude's legal negotiating still takes him to Africa where he's fluent in several languages.

Regarding our reunion, Jean-Claude is interested in contacting the mayor of Orleans to propose this idea and take the lead in what the plaque would say and how to maneuver through all the steps.

Just imagining this possibility, I invite anyone interested to begin thinking how we might have our fathers' contributions--and our own--remembered. If we begin now to discuss through email exchanges in shared broadcast, we have the luxury of having five months to plan.

Rick Negrete organized our first Orleanais reunion, and all of us riding on the bus from the Olivet side of the Loire remember the moment we collectively saw the stunning view of our charming, magical city, and spontaneously burst into tears.

Am smiling as I write, thinking of all the growing-up nonsense we got into and how that could be commemorated in a Bill Murray-Woody Allen film . . . and plaque?

By the way, "Midnight in Paris" was featured on the flight home, and I recommend it. Non-Orleans friends popped out of the woodwork to urge me to see it. Now, my second day back from Paris, am already taking steps to return.

Let's hear from each other!

Bisous,

Melissa             (Her email is KELLY90016@YAHOO.COM

The Veterans Administration is required to look at cases submitted during the the period 25 Sep 1985 to 31 August 2010. There was a class action suit and you may find more information on this by googling "benefits to certain Nehmer class members" or contact a veterans organization for assistance.

Ischemic Heart Desease was added to the list of diseases related to Agent Orange. I believe there was approximately 11 million gallons of
agent orange dispensed in all 4 combat zones of Vietnam. To get consideration, whether a living veteran or survivor of a veteran, you must show proof that claimant was in Vietnam. A DD 214 or efficiency reports will do as well as medals.

In my case, Aubrey White, the Texas Veterans Commission has been a big help. Do not count on the VA helping you. Most states have a similar type state organization to help veterans. You may now also use civilian medical records as well as military medical records. There is potentially tens of thousands of dollars available per claimant, so it is worth investigating eligibility.

You may contact Aubrey White for more information if desired

13 Jun 2011 Remembering PETE DONNELL ('59):  Pete graduated from OHS in 1959, from West Point in 1966, and was killed in Vietnam in 1968.  I recently got the following email from his high school classmate, JUDY HOLDSWORTH Scott ('60):

Dave, this is the link to Pete Donnell's page for the unit he was with when he was killed in Vietnam.  The webmaster has asked for tributes, comments , and other information on Pete for his page. They would also like any photos.  I know he graduated from West Point but I was not able to get a photo of him from them.  Maybe someone else who graduated from West Point can provide a photo.  I tried to e-mail them some pictures of Pete from the OHS yearbook of 1959 but was not successful.  Will you please post this and ask others from OHS to write something on Pete's wall? and any photos they may have?  He was the vice president of the senior class of '59 and president of the student council that year.

The information should go to The Jimersons and the e-mail address  is cat@jimersons.us
or maybe it can be posted directly at the address below. Thanks very much, Judy Holdsworth Scott

13 Jun 2011 UPDATE FROM JIM CHRISTOL ('65)

What a coincidence - - Rusty and Nancy Ralston & Jim and Donna Christol happened to book the same river cruise/winery tour 4 June 2011. The cruise was up the Rappahonnack River to the Ingleside Winery. There was a good tour of the winery and lunch.  They had a nice little museum and of course a gift shop.  The wine tasting was popular with the four of us.  Rusty was well prepared on the boat with wine and cheese plus beer in his cooler.  Good time!

13 Jun 2011 UPDATE FROM TOM CAMPION ('67):

"Almost 62 in a few days.  Started a new career with a large Australian/USA firm not quite a year ago.  Am VP of MFG  with plants
located in FL, TX, CA, AZ, WA, CO, MO, NV, Mexico and Trinidad.  Couldn't take the retirement gig.  After getting about 5 handicap,
jumping in my pool, traveling lots, too much Crown Royal (much too early in the day)....etc......I decided to go back to work.  Best thing I ever
did.  I have an office in LA, Atlanta and Florida.  Life is good and I am very lucky.   Just got back from South Beach, Miami, last weekend.  I
have a factory just north of Miami.  I love Miami and love the beaches in Florida.  Once in awhile I think about how I got to the USA with $200 in my pocket and that is it.  After I graduated from OHS in Orleans, I left Belgium in Sept. 1967 by myself, having only been to the USA once for about 3 months in 3rd grade.   My grandfather in Liege, Belgium wished me well and then I left.  What a trip.  I got to Ohio and didn't
even know where that was.  Had to show my grandparents on a map.  And of course they could not pronounce Ohio correctly, nor could I.

PS: Bert Flannery----I was on the side of road between France and Germany when I saw you on your Honda with your parents following you as we were leaving France.  Won't tell you what I was doing on the side of the road..................unless you ask.

I head to Sacramento and San Fransico next week.

And this coming October/Nov I head back to Brussels, Paris, Orleans and then Bratislava, SK (where I worked).  Have already taken about 20+ of my USA friends over to Paris and Orleans over the last few years.  Been back many many times since I left Europe and while living Slovakia.  Have to get my Orleans fix.  Always!

And have a trip on the Siberian Express planned soon.  Moscow to Beijing.  Back pack, toothbrush..............and life!  Life begins at 60!!!!!

Dave------Anyway, hopefully one day we can have a reunion in Miami or TampaBay and I would be glad to make it happen.  Both places are great with many beaches.   Of course I prefer South Beach for many reasons.  And,  I think about Orleans lots."

The work is very enriching. As an outsider to native cultures, I must work cautiously and with deep respect."
