REUNION NEWS

Posted 27 October 2015 (from Candy Rogers Reynolds)

Can't believe our reunion is almost here and it looks like the weather is going to cooperate with us. Check it out at weather.com.

Attendees can check in with the reunion on the balcony level of the lobby Sunday afternoon. When you're facing the hotel registration desk, just look to your left and up the stairs. You should see some familiar faces there to welcome you with name-tags (provided by Vickey Thayer Kleinsmith) and a welcome bag.

There will be a Welcome Reception in the beautiful lobby of the France's Marion Hotel from 4-6 that afternoon. Hors d'oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available. Dress is casual and travel clothes are fine. Merrily de Lignieres (Merrily Spence Borowiecki) lives in the Charleston area and has agreed to be our restaurant resource for those who would like to find their buddies and go to dinner.

The OHS Hospitality Suite is on the 12th floor (1203) and will be open after the Welcome Reception. There is a kitchen in the suite and the hotel will permit us to bring our own snacks and alcohol. Soft drinks and ice will be provided. I am bringing my annuals from 1960, 1961 and 1962. Please bring any Orleans memorabilia that you would like to share to the suite.

I will post all the hours for the Hospitality Suite when they are finalized.

The dinner/dance is Monday evening from 7-11. The music will be provided by Palmetto Soul and there will be a delicious buffet featuring many low-country specialties. A cash bar will be available. Dress is business casual at a minimum.

Your day is open on Monday so check out the Charleston Visitors Center at http://www.charlestoncvb.com/ if you'd like to explore. The Visitors Center is not too far from our hotel. The Hospitality Suite will be open during the day on Monday and on Tuesday morning. I will post those hours.

Dave Thatcher will post all this information on www.orleansamericanhighschool.com for those who are not on Facebook so please alert your friends.

A bientot!

Transportation to and from the airport:

In regards to a shuttle service FROM the airport:
- I always tell travelers that when they exit the glass doors of the Airport to look to their right and they will see a fleet of shuttles/taxis. There is typically a concierge of sorts that can help them arrange transport either by taxi ($35-$40pp) or by Shuttle ($20-$30pp)

In regards to getting a shuttle TO the airport upon guests departure:
- We recommend Mitch’s Transportation Service. It’s a 3rd party company and guests can pay him directly. They can sign up on the ½ hour marks either with our front desk or bellstaff. This shuttle goes directly to the airport for $15pp if you are travelling with others or $30pp if you are by yourself.
Hope this helps!

The above info is from the hotel. You might want to search online because when I did I saw information indicating a charge of $12-$15 per person for a group shuttle from the airport to the hotel.

The Charleston reunion is fast approaching and I hope you're looking forward to it as much as I am.

Sunday evening (Nov. 1st) we are planning a welcome reception in the beautiful lobby of the Francis Marion Hotel. Travel clothes are fine. Hors d'oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available.

We will have our dinner/dance on Monday night and the dress is business casual - no jeans, flip-flops, bathing suits, tube tops, etc. Coat and tie not required. I will post more details as plans are finalized.

A check-in table will be set up in the upper level of the lobby Sunday afternoon.

The Francis Marion Hotel, and the area around it were not flooded this past weekend, so the reunion is still a go.

Bon Matin mes amies. Attached is a video sent to me by Katrina Riley (class of 1967) honoring the architectural design of Charleston and its longtime mayor, Joe Riley. Not only is Joe Riley the mayor of Charleston but he's also the cousin of Katrina and her brother, Jack Riley, both of whom are attending the reunion.

At minute 1:19 of the video The Francis Marion Hotel is shown in the background. Due to height restrictions in Charleston, it is one is the tallest structures in town and our hospitality suite is on the 12th floor.

If you've not made a hotel reservation, now is the time to do it as we've added 25 rooms to the original 75 being held. If you've made your hotel reservation but not sent in your registration fee, please do as that will help us make our plans.

The band that will be playing for us is called Palmetto Soul.  Here is a YouTube clip of one of their street performances:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoSmkXVJ1uQ
For those of you who were in St Pete in 2012, we had a band called Motel Funk, and they were excellent.  This band we have for the Charleston reunion reminds me of them, and I think they'll do a fantastic job of keeping us up on the dance floor.
