21 June 2008  UPDATE FROM TERRI SERAFINE Lindsey ('65) on 14 June 08:

Another update from Buenos Aire. I've now been here almost three months—time certainly flies when you're having fun, and have established contacts in my ritzy neighborhood starting with a delightful pretty boy hairdresser that gives me funky haircuts, a wine store owner that recommends some awesome Argentine wines, a flower vendor whose roses don't wilt after two days, and taxi drivers that are so friendly, one of whom was a magician who had autographed pictures of David Copperfield and himself plastered all over his windshield and dashboard. My Spanish is improving from all the Argentine soap operas I watch and I'm inhaling the lifestyle with mucho gusto. Argentina is truly a fascinating place, even though I've only ventured out of the city a couple times since my arrival. Next weekend though I'm going to an estancia (escape to the countryside) with a group of expats and tourists.

I've was introduced to a wonderful guy who is an airline steward with an Argentine airline and he is inviting me to explore great cultural events and the local cuisine. He's also a chef and cooked a fabulous dinner for me. Too bad he's gay or I'd be falling in love! The embassy crew are either married or gay themselves so there's not much activity going on with them and me. It's not like it was when I was in the Foreign Service the first time and we bonded as a group and did a lot of traveling and partying together. Now no one drinks or even entertains anymore and as far as traveling, it's hard to get anyone to commit to even a weekend out of town. So I'm going outside the embassy circle to find friends. It was the same way in Paris—most of my friends were Parisians, which was a miracle to be able to get accepted into their circles.

Argentina is a third world country that pretends to be first world by flaunting it's beautiful architecture and boosting about its famous opera house or museums, yet the opera house is closed indefinitely for renovation, and the museums are in disarray. Even the new president is a joke with her daily speeches to the public about the farmer's strike or economy, yet nothing changes and she refuses to discuss the problem with the farmers. Rumor has it the government has organized the truckers to block the roads and the farmers have nothing to do with it. One saying has it, the Argentines build beautiful sand castles, only to step on them.

Customs won't release our vehicles, but also won't give us the reason why many of us have been waiting six months for our cars. I haven't even received my household effects because I shipped a motorcycle with my effects and it's considered a vehicle so I can't get anything until the Argentine government decides what they want to do. Can you imagine the state of our cars after a year of storage? Mine has been in storage since last September. I'm sure it's not good for the tires, engine and paint job especially if it has to sit at the port in Miami with the sea air eating away at it.

But other than the normal problems of living in other countries with strange laws and customs, this is a great place. The Argentines are very friendly, at least the ones I've encountered, and even though they are we are told there's anti-American sentiment here, I don't feel it. People are people and if you treat them with respect, they treat you back the same way.

Until my next update, hasta luego....Terri

4 June 2008 UPDATE ON BILL MCCLAIN ('64):  The following comes from an email that Bill's wife, Michele, sent to Judy Holdsworth Scott ('60)
Judy:

Bill said he had no problem with you telling his story on the website.  The detailed info is as follows:

After suffering for 2 1/2 years with chronic daily headaches, Bill finally found relief with a Chinese acupuncture doctor.  No headaches for over 8 months.

In February he went into the hospital for a heart cath where they opened 2 blocked arteries and put in stints.  Unfortunately, this procedure shut down his kidneys and put him on dialysis.  It now appears to be permanent and his kidney doctor has recommended him for a kidney transplant at Emory in Atlanta.  He will be evaluated the middle of July.  We are hoping that in spite of these other medical issues, he will still be a candidate.

Shortly after that, Bill was having difficulty swallowing and when seeing an ENT doc, they discovered cancerous growths on his vocal cords.  He had them removed and just this week started radiation therapy.  Of course, he must fit all of this in with his 3 times a week dialysis.

Through it all,  he continues to be in good spirits and horrifies the doctors and nurses with cigars hanging out of every pocket.  He said if they can't be in his mouth then they should be somewhere on his body.

I will continue to keep you posted  and thanks for your constant thoughts and prayers.

Love  -  Michele

26 May 2008 DECEASED: VIRGINIA ADEN ('58) on April 8, 2008 in Silverton, Oregon.  Her obituary from the Statesman Journal reads as follow:

Virginia "Ginny" Rae Aden
December 4, 1939 - April 8, 2008

SILVERTON - Virginia, "Ginny" Aden of Silverton died at age 68 after a long illness.  Ginny moved to Mt. Angel, Oregon in 1984 from Southern California after early retiring from the University of California, Los Angeles where she had been employed as a university administrator for 20 years.  Soon after arriving in Oregon, she established a pottery studio and for the next 15 years exhibited and sold her ceramic artwork in local galleries and retail shops.  In addition to her pottery business, she was employed for several years as a bookkeeper/cost accountant, professional gardener, and operated a home care business.  In 1999, she returned to administration and was employed by the Salem-Keizer School District until her retirement.
Always an enthusiastic community volunteer, over the years Ginny worked at the Mt. Angel Food Bank, was hostess at the Wine Garden during Oktoberfest, managed community booths during Homer Davenport Days, and wa! s active in local political campaigns.  Throughout the 1980's, she was a member of the Silverton Art Association, served as its Secretary and Board Member, as well as chairing several committees.  In 1990, she organized a community-wide, non-partisan voter registration drive in Silverton and successfully registered several hundred new voters.  After her retirement, she produced a monthly bulletin for fellow tenants at her senior residence in Silverton, volunteered as a teacher's aide at Eugene Field School, and was a volunteer horticulturist for the Oregon Garden.  She was enthralled by the natural world and the beauty of nature, and was an avid outdoorswoman.  She was also a passionate gardener and her affinity for Nature was reflected in the lush flower and vegetable gardens she nurtured and produced.
Born in San Francisco, California, Ginny was well-traveled throughout her lifetime, living in several states as well as abroad.  She lived in! Japan for nearly a year when she was a young child, then spent the remainder of her childhood in rural North Carolina.  She lived in Orleans, France for a year where she graduated from high school and traveled to Switzerland, England, and Belgium.  She would remember her year in France as one of the happiest and most illuminating times of her youth, and had planned to attend the 50th year reunion of her Orleans High School graduation class to be held in 2008.
After returning from France, she completed two academic years at Coker College, Hartsville, South Carolina, then moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked and completed courses at the American University.  In 1960, she moved to Santa Monica, California, was soon employed at UCLA, married, gave birth to her only child, and after her divorce several years later, became single mom and sole provider of her son until he became an independent, young adult.  In 1970, to give her son a "taste of country! life", Ginny took a leave from UCLA and moved to Ferndale, Washington where she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Sociology from Western Washington University in Bellingham.  Before returning to an administrative position at UCLA, she lived with members of the Hopi Nation in Arizona to assist in an anthropological research project, then traveled again to Europe, living in England for several months with her son.  Ginny treasured the experiences and opportunities gained from her many travels and domiciles, however she often said that by moving to Oregon she had finally found her "home".
Survivors include her loving family: beloved son, Mark Janczak; daughter-in-law, Dania Janczak; grandchildren, Emmett and Annissa Janczak; parents, Marti and Roger Smith, all of Downey, Calif.; brother, Ralph Aden, and sister-in-law, Laura Aden, of Roosevelt, Ariz.; aunt and kindred spirit, Mary Lynn Trautechaud of Albuquerque, N.M.; 4 nephews; 1 grandnephew! ; 2 grandnieces; her loyal and supportive family-of-friends in Oregon; her longtime, devoted friend, Karen Skinner of Canada, and her cherished feline companion, Pia, now relocated to Downey, Calif.
Remembrances may be made to Willamette Valley Hospice, Salem, Oregon.

19 May 2008 UPDATE ON STEVE GENG ('61):  Steve says that his book "Thick As Thieves" is now out in paperback so that all our classmates still on Army pensions can afford to buy it.  His girlfriend designed a website to promote the book.  You'll find it at HTTP://STEVEGENG.COM
12 May 2008 UPDATE ON BITSY CABALLERO Lee ('64):
Dear Dave,

I want to say I'll be there with my husband, but life is really topsy now.  I hope that there will be late bookings, so to speak, just in case things turn around.  San Diego would be perfect because it's so close to all our kids in Phoenix.

My book got published last October, it's called Ramblings - Off the Record.  I'm thoroughly disappointed in my publisher (but you make very bad deals the first time out) because she changed my (I thought) very good title "Off the Record, an irreverent look at life in court" to that title it has, to reflect her own magazine Ramblings, (for court reporters), I suppose thinking it would boost sales, but it did nothing so far, and then she put this ridiculous cover on the front that makes it look like a kid's book.  I had in mind, you know, glasses and scales, a court reporting machine, transcripts piled around, and she has a drawing of a kid on a rock dreaming of castles.  that was fine for the first chapter, but not for the front cover.  so back to the "drawing board."  she's hounding me for another book, and I would rather die than go with her again.  so, anyhoooooooo

Work is difficult to come by here.  I was in the Hague (war crimes) three weeks, and I spend about two weeks out of every month in Dublin, fly all over, Prague, Spain (there was a funny one ... the 21 year old space cadet put me on three flights from tel aviv to Barcelona ... i was supposed to be in Gibraltar ..., then a disgruntled attorney from France picked me up at 8 in the morning and drove 100 miles an hour for a few hours to get to Gibraltar, then he didn't need me until 2 p.m., and after promising to get me to Madrid for my next-day flight, he dumped me in Gibraltar and said, "Go thopping, the thtores are nices in Geee braltar" and sped away with all my equipment (about $10,000 worth).  aaaaagh.  And then after the deposition (and after he had no cash, nor did the translator, but granny had some ... I had to pay for their boozy lunch) he decided he didn't want to drive us (through the night) to madrid, so me and a 21 year old amercian translator from St. Louis had to hop a BUS for 10 hours with pigs and chickens.  It was a fabulous ride, packed to the gills on a bus -- granny hadn't been on a bus since she was 16 -- and of course the 21 year old translator, a male with a hollow leg (and equally hollow head) needed sustained food intake at each stop, and still had no money.  So granny got to spend the night with a 21 year old, feed and burp him on a two-hour schedule, and guess what, it ain't anything like one would imagine.  He didn't even know who the beatles were.  now come on.  I did know who Smashing Pumpkins is, and I'm really not into atonal music, so we really had nothing to discuss on any level. the bus was packed with muslims, so that even if you got that little bit of sleep, knees aching from not being able to move around or stretch, they had recorded prayers that one of them was dutiful to play, and the rest of them were ass in the air in the aisle, so ... oh, it was joyful to say the least.

So I am still farming myself out around the world.  I would be in fat city but we bought a restaurant.  (Don't do this.)  It was the worst mistake of our life.  Of course, it's a Mexican food restaurant, the best in Israel, also Europe.  There are a few, but they are god-awful.  And of course, what other name than Caballero's ... and it's a haven for Americans, aside from the comfort food, they just love to gather there.  My daughter is a graduate chef, and does a great job, but there were so many hidden costs -- like, (the girls, our daughters, wouldn't take a single word of advice, even though we sent in experts to give them aid) and they were so emotionally attached to the one building, so they overpaid for equipment by four times its value, and most of it had to be thrown out before they could open their doors.  the fridges didn't work, and they were afraid to run the electricity until they were ready to open, which is not the day to find out, when you just stocked the freezer with 3000 bucks worth of perishable goods.  then there's the sign police -- "Vat?  you hev a sign?  Dat's $5000."  So we said fine, we'll take down the sign.  took it down (still a fine, however, for daring to put up a sign on a street full of signs).  Then painted the name on the window.  "Vat?  you hev a sign?  Dat's $5000."  You can't win in a state run by bureaucrats.  fire codes, civil codes, police requirements, mouse police, cockroach police, the pesky neighbor in the back alley who doesn't like the sound of laughter, the old and probably insane lady who stands on her balcony and screams out at night, "Help, I'm trapped and they won't feed me or give me water."  Vicky has convinced her to come down and get food at the outside tables in the back where the staff take their dinner if she promises to put on a dress, and she can have all the water she wants, so she does come down, and she does put on a dress, a hat, gloves and stockings and wobbly high heels to come down a couple nights a week to have a free meal.  there's the veg guy who is hitting on the younger girl until the older one is threatening him with a meat cleaver, and the standard beggars who come around.  The girls have a policy, you can't come in and bother the patrons, but if you're hungry you can come around the back for a meal.  I don't think they give away a lot of food, but the funny part is, we've had hungry people who realize it isn't kosher and walk away.  go figure.  A taco without cheese?  please.  but it's been a constant struggle, like last month the waitress called me in dublin and said our chairs are falling apart and someone's going to fall .... so I spent 2 grand getting the chairs in, because I can afford that better than a law suit.  it's just one thing after another, and even though it breaks even most days, it's so far behind that it strips me of every cent I can earn and then some.

work dried up completely in dublin, where I made my most money, and that because someone convinced the court that digital recording was cheaper than court reporters.  they spend 33 million euros installing it ... and I don't think the 80 court reporters would cost that in five years, or even ten.  but whatever.  so I pray for work and to maintain our lifestyle ... (and the two daughters in the restaurant had to move home with their four cats ... omg ... )

the singular "consolation," since they feel so badly ... aaaaagh ..... is that they PROMISE that when we're "old" they will take care of us.

Somebody shoot me.

Heh-heh.  Oh, by the way, I write a humor column for the Jerusalem Post now called Israel Lite, that gets published every other week.  Of course, back when I was dreaming of being lois lane, no one explained to me that writers make no money unless they're named Stephen King ...

Wishing I could go to San Diego ... but we all know (at this stage of our lives) that things can always change.  I don't have the woe-is-me attitude I had all through my 20s and 30s and even 40s.  Life always surprises me, and usually it's a pleasant one.

Much affection, from Carmelita (Caballero) Lee ....
Hod HaSharon, Israel

(for all the crabbing, I do live in the lap of luxury, thanks to God's good provision, with magnificent views, so ... I don't want to complain too loudly).

19 Jan 2008 DECEASED: MARK GRUNDLER ('62) on January 11, 2008 in Portsmouth, Ohio.  His brother, Clark, writes:
Dave, I apologize for omitting you on my original notification that Mark died last Friday (Jan.11). The whole obit was published in the "Portsmouth Daily Times" on Sunday, January 13th. It has two glaring inaccuracies : Christopher is in Grinnell, Iowa (not Texas). and my sister's middle name was Kay not Marie. Also, omitted was that Mark was active in the local community theatre. He had done "Man of La Mancha", another show which escapes me and directed a play. The services were fine. I stayed with Amalia my oldest niece at her apartment. Most of the rest of out-of-towners stayed at the Ramada as guests of Bev's son-in-law, the owner -- really nice man. Curtis, my son, came from California and Megan, my daughter, was very frustrated that she couldn't come from China. (She will return to the states in June). They both developed close relationships with Mark and family while Curtis and Megan were at Univ. of South Alabama and Mark and family were in Jackson, Miss.-- close enough for frequent weekend visits. Please use as much of this as you can on the Orleans web site.

I am doing OK. It was a shock and I think I was in denial until I saw him "layed out" in the funeral home. He and Bev had planned to get married in the next 3 weeks. They were then going to pack Bev's motor coach and head off across country to visit family and friends. I am sure there were a lot of OHS people on their list. I know they had planned to visit me here in Texas. Bev is a lovely lady and very gracious. Her family came to love Mark and it was nice to see that my nieces genuinely loved Bev too. They will have each other for comfort which the girls really need. Their mother lives in Cincinnati and has her own life.

I am going along with plans to move to Fremont, California. I have basically been approved but there are no vacancies at this time -- a waiting game.

ILY, Clark        Mark's obituary can be found here.

13 Jan 2008 UPDATE: TOM CAMPION ('67):   Tom writes --
On 1/1/08 I am starting a new career.  I have joined a very large global building materials company.  It is a Swiss Company called HOLCIM.  They have locations spread across the world.  I will be their new General Manager for Customer and Operational Excellence for Holcim (USA) and will have 80+ locations throughout the USA.  It will entail much travel.  Will continue to reside in Tampa Bay, Florida with an office in Michigan.

I retired from Johns Manville after 33 years with my last stint working and based in the Slovak Republic.  I then worked for 2 other companies after my retirement from Johns Manville.  James Hardie with factories in Plant City, Florida and Brisbane, Australia.  Then worked for a year with Guardian Insulation on the West Coast based out of Kingman, Arizona.

I then tried almost a year of "real" retirement and just couldn't do it anymore.  Had to get back to work.   I am very lucky to be able to join a great company as Holcim.

Visited Orleans this last May.  Drove down from Paris and spent the day in Orleans and Olivet going down memory lane again.  Was there from the end of 1957 through 1967 and it will always be a big part of my life.  It is always good to go back.  Also had a family reunion in Liege, Belgium where I was born and spent a great deal of my childhood.  Lots of fun.

Was it really 1963??!!  40 years and counting - hard to believe.  So much has happened.  I've been lucky - from surviving Nam to a great wife for over 38 years to two terrific kids to now having a five year old granddaughter that has my heart in her hands and doesn't know it.  I now am retired in upper Michigan after a career at P&G, NCR and AT&T.  It's been quite a ride and I'm now settled down in a new house in a small town next to the water on a golf course.  As I said, I've been lucky.  I can only wish all of my old friends the same situation.

Buried my Dad a couple of years ago in Arlington in Washington D.C. and my mom joined him this year.  The good with the bad but the life cycle goes on.  Hope you are doing well and enjoying your life.  Regards,  Vince

As the younger brother of 3 OHS siblings, I appreciate that you include the class of 72 in your database.  I have been stationed in Europe several times in the past 30 years and visited Orleans on more that a dozen occasions.  On one trip, I went into the building on Coligny Casern where the snack bar used to be (it was being used as a garage by the city) and chipped some of the Yellow and Black tiles off the walls.  The workers thought that I was nuts but it is a great reminder of greasy cheeseburgers and bugging my brothers and sister (by walking into “their” area)!

30 Aug 2007 UPDATE: MICHAEL ALEXANDER ('68):

I'm long overdue to check in with you and what would have been the class of '68 if Charlie DeGaulle hadn't given us the boot. I attended OHS from 1964-1967 and like everyone else on the OAHS site, I remember those days fondly. I got such a kick out of seeing the photos of so many of my old friends, I wanted to send you a couple recent photos.

I'm living large in Medway, Mass., a small town 25 miles SW of Boston. My wife, Lorri, my two kids, Jessie and Leigh, and I have been living here for about 18 years.

I came to the Boston area way back in 1972 to finish college at Boston University. Before that, I was at The American College (now University) of Paris and Schiller College (where I went to delay having to leave Paris). I figured I would grab my degree in poli sci and blow back to Europe. Instead, I got an M.S. degree in mass comm, got a job, got married and more than 30 years later, I'm still planning on going back. For nearly all that time, I've been a journalist, mainly writing for magazines covering IT. I wrote a couple of books on computer security and crime in the late '90s. I also wrote a weekly column on consumer electronics for The Boston Globe for many years. Today, I'm a publisher for a small company that puts out a couple of magazines and a Web site covering telecommunications.

The best way to reach me, like everyone else, I suppose, is by email at malexder@gmail.com.

I have been through Orleans three or four times over the last 20 years or so.  Ila and I were there two years ago.  Massive changes - it is hard to find things I once new the whereabouts of.  Probably the most interesting new thing there was the retro-modern street car system that runs from Olivet into the heart of Orleans.  I will dig through my pictures from that trip and send some to you. Sorry I missed the Roanoke reunion - it would have been relative close by.

A question for you and any others that were in Orleans in the 59 - 61 time frame:  I have recently read Alistair Horne's book A Savage War of Peace which is a history of the Algerian war of independence from France.  A lot of momentous stuff happened in the 59 - 61 time frame in French politics. On thinking back on this, it is obvious that I was completely oblivious as to what was going on.  Was this just me or was everyone else at OHS tuned out on this too?

1 June 2007 DECEASED: GEORGE ASHBAUGH ('66) on May 16, 2007 in Biloxi, Mississippi from a heart attack.  George was retired Air Force, and was buried at the veterans cemetery in Biloxi with full military honors.
1 June 2007 RETIRED & MOVED: GENE PELTIER ('62): Gene and his wife, Rita, have moved from Tampico, Illinois to Memphis, Tennessee after Gene retired from a government career that included 27 years of military service and 34 years of Army civil service.  His new email is PELTMAN2@YAHOO.COM.   Gene and Rita have 3 sons in the Army, and he wanted to share this poem that he wrote "for all our military, but especially for two of my three military sons that were in Iraq in the same unit at the same time.  The third son was a medical specialist in the repat ward where they bring the wounded, praying everyday one of them would not be his brother.  I just about went nuts."

There is a little thing I sometimes do,
and I'd like to do it just for all of you.

There is a little poem that I often quote,
and it so happens it's one I wrote.

The next time you see an old vet or a soldier,
just ask to shake his hand or pat his shoulder.

He may be an Army GI, Navy or Coast Guard seaman, or she may be the cutest little airman you've ever seen.
But then, too, he may be just an old straight-backed, leather-necked, dog-faced marine.

Just remember though that each and every soldier is someone's daughter or someone's son.
Then when you shake that hand or pat their shoulder, take time to thank them for what they all have done.

Then when the day is done, and comes the setting sun,
Lift a little prayer to heaven, asking God to bless and protect them, each and every one.

Gene also wanted me to tell you that he has big gaps in his memory from years of undiagnosed diabetes.  Now that he has it "under control", conversations with fellow OHSers is helping him to reconstruct his days in Orleans.  So, if you've got some dirt on him, or just some nice remembrances, touch base with him, and help fill in the gaps.

22 February 2007 DECEASED: DANNY L. SMITH ('62): KILLED IN VIETNAM ON 30 JUNE 1966.  Rumor of Danny's death was recently brought to my attention by Bud Flette, while he was visiting here in Cambridge for a week.  A little Internet research into some of the Vietnam Memorial websites, and a couple emails to some war veterans revealed information and a photo that brought the search for Danny to a sad ending.  You'll find a photo of Danny on the Class of '62 photo page, and what follows is a tribute that was posted to Danny's profile on WWW.THEWALL-USA.COM website:

The world should know Danny's story. He and his brother Darrell were Army Brats. Their father, Gerald L. Smith was a career soldier who saw service in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam over a span of more than thirty years service. Danny was on his second enlistment when he was killed. Dad wanted him to go to flight school and become a Warrant Officer. Danny wanted to get a Viet Nam tour out of the way before he went to Flight School. Dad, of course we called him Smitty, (what else) and Danny were in Viet Nam at the same time although they were not assigned together. Younger brother Darrell was in basic training at the time. My wife and I were thrilled at the prospect of seeing Darrell again after not having contact with the family for nearly ten years. He was coming to Fort Eustis, Virginia where I was assigned. Then one morning I read a headline in the newspaper. One I shall never forget. "Soldier escorts GI son's body home from Viet Nam". I didn't take time then to read the story. I found out later that day that the "Soldier" was Smitty and the "Son" was Danny. I know I could never feel the loss that Smitty and his wife felt at the loss of their son but there is still an emptyness when I think of the 12 year old boy I once knew who gave his life in that long ago war. 19 January 2007 UPDATE ON CHARLES BERGEN ('62): In 1988, Charlie was given the bad news that, for medical reasons, he could no longer fly B-17s spraying fire retardants over forest fires.  So, fate finally landed him in Lenox, Massachusetts where he now does home remodeling and also works as an agent for Isgood Realty.  Charlie was married for awhile back in the 60's, but so far has managed to elude captivity again.  He frequents the local gym, and is an avid spinner (stationary biker)

17 January 2007 ABEL WHITE ('61): Status on his horse riding accident in October, 2006 --

Just thought I would let you know that I appear to be recovering pretty well from my latest horse accident.  I sustained a head injury which took 6 weeks to show up in my starting to walk to the left. Thought I only broke two ribs. I was taken from Darnell Army hospital to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin on 4 Dec 06.  I was there 4 days.  Diagnosis was "sub-dural hemorrhage" due to a leaking blood vessel.  Fortunately, it was exterior to the brain and surgery and recovering better than anticipated. I can now say I do have two holes in my head but actually not visible.  They sure give terrible haircuts prior to surgery.  I went for a follow up and not as cleared up as hoped, so may have to have more surgery.  Another 3 to 4 weeks will tell after another CAT Scan etc. I guess my training of horses is over, but can still do ground work in the round pen if I choose to, but no horsing around as Aubrey says. I was back at work 2 weeks after surgery and doing great. I was able to enjoy my daughter and 2 grand daughters from Fairfax, Va. along with my other two grown up kids over the holidays. I am truly blessed with great family, friends, and coworkers. I am especially blessed with Christine at my side. She is the one that actually said, NO Choice Your Going TO ER.  She's a registered nurse and excellent horse rider and competitor.  Anyway, thought I would update.  My goals for 2007 are, Keep Christine close to me, no accidents, diet/exercise, and continue to thank God for my blessings and being here. Appreciate being put on prayer lists.    Thanks, Abel

4 January 2007 DECEASED: "BUNNY" TUDDER, mother of Dale, John and David, on 19 November 2006, in Newport News, Virginia. Mark Jones ('67) notified me of her death, and asked that I share his eulogy of her with you.

Dave,
Below is a tribute to one of our OHS "family". Dave Alperovitz (OHS'68) called me a week before the holidays and told me Mrs Tudder had passed away on the 19th of November. He said he was coming down for her service.  Dave and I last spent time together at the DC reunion. He traveled all the way from New Hampshire to Newport News on the day after Christmas and we attended Mrs. Tudder's service On 27 Dec 06. She and her family meant so much to both of us growing up in Orleans.

Thanks
 Mark

In November 2006 the OHS family lost one of its truly iconic members. Mrs. "Bunny" Tudder, wife of the late LTC Bailey Tudder and the mother of Dale, John and David. Those who were in Olivet in 64-66 will remember "Mother Tudder's Boarding House" as her home was often referred to, because of her openness, hospitality and if need be a place for a kid to remain over night if you missed that last shuttle bus back to the main casern (remember we had no phones!) She was a most gracious hostess and understanding lady who was a shoulder for many a teenager going through those life-ending events such as; what to wear for homecoming, or who to ask to the Sadie Hawkins dance or going steady, (even when dad did not want you  to) and of course the breaking up. She was there at any time day or night with a grand smile, a bright word, and always music.  Besides being a gracious lady, she was a friend to all, forever. At her funeral in Newport News, VA two days after Christmas, it was noted that she had kept in contact with a kindergarten classmate for more than 84 years. It was also noted that had that gathering occurred in Orleans forty years earlier the church would have been packed with teenagers grateful to her for her friendship and for allowing them a place to "hang out". Ms Tudder was one of the most cultured people I had the pleasure to know and she passed those traits to all of her children. Her husband Bailey was the Scoutmaster of the troop in Orleans from 63-66 and had his own positive influence on many young boys. I  am blessed to have been touched by both of these great human beings. In the
1990s I was reacquainted with Bunny in Newport News as she worked one of her great causes, harmony and understand and equal rights for all.  Ms Tudder is predeceased by her husband Bailey (1996) and her younger son David (2005).   And  is survived by her daughter Dale  Scott (OHS'68)  her husband and wonderful  family of Newport News, Virginia. Her multi talented and blessed son John (OHS'69) his wife and great family of Charleston, South Carolina, and a bunch of grand kids and great grand kids. Bunny Tudder was truly one who loved life and those she lived it with.
